I used a great free video IOS app called GameUrVideo to make a class writing assessment provocation video.
It has 2 settings-Live! and Game your Video.
With the Live! setting you shoot a video and add effects on the fly-choosing to change soundtrack, special effects, lighting filters etc. With the Game you Video setting you choose an existing video from your Camera Role to change using a range of different ‘Flavours’. Choosing ‘Chaplin’ will change your video in an grainy black and white film accompanied by some jerky camera shots and some plinky piano music. There’s also ‘Haunted’,‘8mm’, ‘Funny Talks’,(FREE) ‘Zombie’, ‘Hip Hop’ and ‘Sci-Fi’ (69p each using in app purchase-pretty reasonable for a free app). Each ‘Flavour’ turning your video into a weird masterpiece.
As you can see the ‘Sci-Fi’ flavour, combined with my video, gives the first-person impression of an alien robot or terminator looking around my school’s Discovery Centre. I used this to inspire a writing assessment on the recount genre. The title was ‘An alien robot visits the Discovery Centre’.
I used the ‘Reflector’ app to wirelessly transmit from my phone to my Interactive White Board and gave them a story about being sent a mysterious video at 2am in the morning and showing them some green toy slime, a few odd metal bits and a piece of paper with a lot of robot writing on it.
Using a video provided enough stimulus to inspire some great recount writing from all my class-even the boys and those working below target levels! It completely hooked them in and was much better than the usual ‘paper’ based or oral starter.
I would recommend the app and using a video as a stimulus for firing the imagination of your class for what is normally a very boring assessment!Written by Julian S Wood - www.ideasfactory.me/about/"rel="author"
